ASAMBLEA DE MIGRANTES INDÍGENAS EN LA CIUDAD DE MÉXICO
(INDIGENOUS MIGRANTS ASSEMBLY IN MEXICO CITY)

The Indigenous Migrants Assembly in Mexico City is an organization in which different migrant communities co-ordinate their work and jointly encourage actions and projects aimed to impel the recognition of a "multicultural" city of which we, indigenous people with our own identity are part. This medley of cultures should be reflected in an "intercultural" coexistence.

This Assembly is integrated by several communities of indigenous migrants ( Zapotecos, Mixes, Nahuas and Triquis, among others) who live in the city. Members of more than 15 indigenous organizations participate and each organization has an average of 850 members.

Each community of migrants began to re-organize their community life in Mexico City since the 50's. As a way of strengthen our identity, we preserve our language, music, dance and our cosmovision of respect for our fellow men and nature. An other representative aspect that we preserve is the way in which our communities are organized.

Besides, indigenous migrants communities have been developing different projects to create philharmonic bands, dancing groups , radio centers and multicultural education projects. This projects have been carried out with the resources of the indigenous migrants communities.

Regarding this subject, the Indigenous Migrants Assembly is trying to promote and strengthen this kind of organization so that we can be able to:

* Consolidate our community life in Mexico City.

*Promote people's acceptance of our culture so that we can learn to coexist with different cultures.

*Make the local and federal governments to recognize indigenous migrants communities and to establish a new public policy that includes us.

One of the Assembly's priority objective is the creation of a community center in which we can establish different work areas aimed to our cultural, social and economic development. Besides, we can use it as a means to establish relationships between civil society, government and indigenous communities of Mexico City.

We contemplate the creation of the following areas:

a) Indigenous Communication
We will install a Multilingual Center of Radio Production with the digital equipment we have.
We will create a webpage as a means to disseminate information as well as to link the communities of migrants among them and with the society in general.

We will install a computer center in which the communities´ members can have access to internet and other services.

b) Indigenous Peoples' Rights
We will establish different areas to strengthen community life.

We will provide a translation service to translate the rights of the indigenous migrants and other documents.

c) Identity and Culture
This area is in charge of strengthen indigenous identity and promote it within the society of Mexico City. It promotes our tradicional celebrations, the philharmonic bands, dancing groups and sports. It also promotes speaking mother tongues within the families and the communities of migrants.

d) Collective Self-development
In this area we impel projects that should involve the participation of the Assembly's members.

In terms of education and multicultural activities promotion, it works on the transformation of the educational institutions so that they include indigenous cultures.

We call upon the civil society, private assistance institutions, NGOs and other organizations for support for this project. We receive donations made payable to Donato García García in the bank account 6129972403. If you want tax -deductible receipt we are able to give it.
